A Practical Lighting Guide for AI Portrait Photos
Everyone writing about AI portraits says "use good lighting" and then moves on. That is not actionable. This article explains what good lighting means specifically, why the model cares, and gives you five setups you can reproduce with things you already own.
What the model is actually reading
A photograph is flat. The only way any system — human or machine — recovers the three-dimensional shape of a face from a flat image is by reading how light falls across it. The gradient from the bridge of the nose down to the cheek tells you how prominent the nose is. The shadow under the lower lip tells you the shape of the chin. The highlight along the cheekbone tells you where the cheekbone sits.
Take the gradients away — by lighting the face completely flat, or by blowing out the highlights, or by burying everything in shadow — and that shape information disappears. The model then reconstructs an average face instead of yours.
The four ways lighting goes wrong
Too hard. Direct sun or a bare bulb creates shadows with sharp edges and a huge brightness difference between lit and shadowed areas. Detail is lost at both ends: the highlights clip to white, the shadows crush to black.
Too flat. A ring light held directly in front of the face, or an on-camera flash, eliminates shadow almost entirely. The face has no modelling, which sounds flattering but removes exactly the depth cues the model needs.
From above. Ordinary ceiling lighting is the default indoor condition and one of the worst. It shadows the eye sockets, darkens under the nose and under the chin, and makes everyone look tired.
From behind. A bright window or a lamp behind you turns the face into a silhouette. The camera exposes for the bright background and your features vanish.
Five setups that work
1. The window, no equipment. Stand one to two metres from a window, facing it, during daylight. Overcast is ideal. This gives a large, soft, frontal source — the same quality of light a professional would spend money to imitate. This single setup outperforms almost everything else on this list.
2. The window, at forty-five degrees. Same window, but turn so it is off to one side. You get gentle modelling: one side of the face brighter, one side softly shadowed. This produces more dimensional, more interesting portraits than straight-on, and it works well with editorial and studio themes.
3. The window plus a bounce. Setup two, with something white — a sheet of paper, a white shirt, a pillowcase — held on the shadow side to bounce light back. This lifts the shadow without removing the modelling. It is the classic portrait setup, assembled from household objects.
4. Open shade outdoors. Outside, on a sunny day, stand in the shade of a building or a large tree, facing out towards the open sky. You get soft, even, bright light with none of the harshness of direct sun. Avoid dappled shade under a thin canopy — the patches of sun create exactly the hard-edged shadows you are trying to escape.
5. Golden hour, facing the light. The hour after sunrise or before sunset gives warm, low, directional light. Face towards it, not away. Expect a warm colour cast, which some themes will keep and others will neutralise.
Checking your light in ten seconds
Take the photo, then look at three things. Can you see catchlights — small bright reflections — in both eyes? If not, the light is not in front of you. Is there detail visible in the shadowed side of the face, rather than solid black? If not, the light is too hard or too directional. Is the brightest part of the face grey rather than pure white? If it is pure white, the highlight has clipped and that detail is gone permanently.
All three pass, and you have a source photo that will preserve your identity well.
Common indoor traps
Mixed colour temperature is the one that catches people most often: a warm tungsten lamp on one side and cool daylight from a window on the other gives your face two different skin tones simultaneously. Pick one source and switch the other off.
Screen light is the other. Working by the light of a monitor gives an upward, cool, uneven wash that reads strangely in generated output. Turn on a real light, or move to a window.
Why this is worth ten minutes
Lighting is the highest-leverage thing you control. A well-lit photo from a three-year-old phone produces better generations than a badly lit photo from the newest camera on the market, because the limitation is never sensor resolution — it is how much shape information reached the sensor in the first place. Ten minutes spent moving to a window will improve your results more than any amount of theme-hopping.
